NYCW
“NIGHT
OF CHAMPIONS”
HAMMERSTEIN BALLROOM
NEW YORK, NY
THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 2003
COMMENTATORS: JUSTIN SCHENCK & FERNANDO RAMIREZ
* BACKSTAGE – The show opens with a shot of FRANK BRIGGS entering the
Hammerstein Ballroom on the biggest night of his career, the night he
challenges JON
DULBERG for the NYCW Championship inside a steel cage. BRIGGS looks extremely determined and quietly
enters his locker room and slams the door shut, extremely focused on the task
at hand.
*
MATCH 1 – THE
TYRANT d. SYDESWYPE via pinfall at
4:38 with the full nelson suplex after outside interference from JOE MALONE. MALONE first disposed of SYDESWYPE’s partner BIG VERNON and caused the
distraction that led to TYRANT’s victory. (Referee: Ethan McKay)
* MATCH 2 – NYCW WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP – LIZ RUSH © d. ERICA at 5:57 via pinfall with a cobra
clutch bomb. (Referee: Corbin Page)
* MATCH 3 – GREG PRICE d. KRIS
ANTHONY at 14:17 via pinfall with a crucifix. This match contained many heart-stopping near-falls and could
have gone either way many times, but PRICE dug deeper and pulled out the
victory. (Referee: Chris Korbin)
* BACKSTAGE – JOSH MCGUIRE is standing by with JACKIE BACCARO, fresh off his appearance at PWA
Symphony of Destruction. During the
interview, it is extremely noticeable that BACCARO has gotten full of himself since participating
on a PWA pay-per-view, despite being dismantled, and has a very condescending
attitude. BACCARO clearly
believes that he is better than everyone in NYCW and feels that he should be a
permanent member of the PWA roster. However,
since that isn’t happening right now, BACCARO plans on taking out his frustrations
on everyone in NYCW, starting with DAMIEN FIELDS tonight.
* MATCH 4 – JACKIE BACCARO d. DAMIEN FIELDS at 3:28 via submission with a bearhug. BACCARO was vicious and methodical in this
match, not playing to the crowd at all, and the New York crowd responded by
booing him. (Referee: Ethan McKay)
* MATCH 5 – JON SASS and MARTIN BLACKBURN d. ANDREW LIVINGSTON and ANTHONY DESIO at 8:02. SASS pinned DESIO after the End
of the Line. (Referee: Chris Korbin)
* BACKSTAGE – We are taken to an interview with NYCW Tag Team Champions THE OLD SCHOOL, BOBBY BURRIS and ALEX MASON. The pair comment on their title match with
former champions DA
BANDITZ, which is next. BURRIS and MASON say that they
remember the war the two teams went through in a ladder match on June 5 when
the OLD SCHOOL won the
championship, and they expect more of the same tonight. However, the OLD SCHOOL guarantees that tonight, the result
will be the same: the OLD SCHOOL will emerge
victorious.
* MATCH 6 – NYCW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP – THE OLD SCHOOL © d. DA BANDITZ at 12:28 to
retain the title. BOBBY BURRIS pinned JERMAINE HARRIS after ALEX MASON blasted HARRIS in the face
with the Tag Team Championship belt. CHARLES WALKER tried to break
up BURRIS’ pin, but was
too late, and the OLD
SCHOOL retained the gold. (Referee: Corbin Page)
* MATCH 7
– NYCW HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP – STEEL CAGE MATCH – JON DULBERG © VS. FRANK
BRIGGS (Referee: Jim Parris):
After
the cage was lowered and the bell sounded, there was a feeling-out period
between champion JON DULBERG and his much larger challenger FRANK BRIGGS. BRIGGS, a heel for most of his NYCW tenure,
saw excessive cheers in his match last week against RYAN KNAKAL, and saw them
continue tonight for the most part.
DULBERG, however, was more over with the crowd than ever before, having
not competed in roughly four weeks.
DULBERG kept the pace of the match quick, keeping his challenger off
base, but BRIGGS eventually turned the tables, nailing DULBERG with explosive
high-impact maneuvers that stunned the champion. After fifteen minutes of action, DULBERG and BRIGGS continued to
battle back and forth and RYAN KNAKAL made his way to ringside to a massive
amount of heat. DULBERG knocked BRIGGS
down and went for the 7th Inning Stretch, but BRIGGS countered and
blasted DULBERG with a huge powerbomb!
BRIGGS goes to the door, attempting to escape, but RYAN KNAKAL slams the
door on his face, knocking him backwards!
KNAKAL then takes a steel chair and heads inside the cage, laying waste
to both DULBERG and BRIGGS. KNAKAL
knocks both men unconscious with the chair, prompting the match to be thrown
out and NYCW officials to storm the ring to restore order. As the show goes off the air, KNAKAL exits
the cage and steals the NYCW Championship belt, taking it backstage with him
and effectively ruining the “Night of Champions.”
WINNER AT 17:07: NO CONTEST
STILL NYCW CHAMPION: JON DULBERG
